Will GTA Online shut down when GTA 6 launches?

Updated 2026-10-05
No. Rockstar has never announced a shutdown, and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told investors in August 2026 that the company expects to continue supporting GTA Online going forward. GTA V’s online service has already outlived two console generations, and a long overlap with GTA VI is the likeliest outcome.

Take-Two has said the opposite

On the August 2026 earnings call, Strauss Zelnick told investors Take-Two expects to keep supporting GTA Online after GTA VI arrives. That is the clearest statement available, and it points away from a shutdown rather than towards one.

The commercial logic is straightforward. GTA Online still generates substantial recurrent spending, and GTA VI is launching without an announced online mode — closing a profitable service with no replacement ready would make little sense.

What is actually closing

Some shutdown headlines refer to third-party multiplayer platforms rather than GTA Online itself. Unofficial clients have been wound down, including the community-run RAGE:MP server in August 2026 and the Alt:V platform.

Those closures affect unofficial PC multiplayer, not Rockstar’s own service. If you play GTA Online on console or through Rockstar directly, none of it applies to you.

What to expect after launch

The realistic pattern is a long overlap. When GTA V launched, Rockstar supported the previous game for years, and GTA Online itself has survived two full console generations with continuing weekly updates.

Weekly event bonuses are still shipping, and we track them every Thursday. If Rockstar announces an end-of-service date, it will appear here and in our news feed the same day.
