Every confirmed animal species in the State of Leonida — what lives where, which creatures are rare, and how tracking works.
GTA VI contains more than 170 animal species across the State of Leonida — the largest ecosystem Rockstar has ever built, surpassing Red Dead Redemption 2. The roster covers over 60 birds and more than 30 land mammals, plus fish, reptiles, amphibians, and marine life. Rockstar has deliberately mirrored real Florida ecology, including the invasive species that have established themselves there.
The largest single group in Leonida's ecosystem. Coastal and wetland birds dominate, reflecting real Florida birdlife.
Ranges from native Florida wildlife to introduced species that have established themselves across the state.
Concentrated in the Grassrivers wetlands, though alligators have been shown across multiple regions.
Encountered primarily while scuba diving, which Rockstar has confirmed as a full activity with its own underwater ecosystem.
Standard wildlife populating each region according to its habitat. Encountered through normal exploration.
Species that require seeking out — specific habitats, times of day, or weather conditions. Tracked separately from common wildlife.
Uncommon species Rockstar has confirmed exist but has not named. Expected to reward exploration of remote areas.
The top tier. Rockstar has confirmed legendary animals are in the game but has withheld their identities until launch. Red Dead Redemption 2 used a comparable system for its legendary hunts.
A tracking system returns, letting players follow and locate specific species. Rockstar has not detailed whether it ties into a compendium or completion checklist.
Rockstar has highlighted substantially upgraded rendering and simulation for animal coats, feathers, and movement over Red Dead Redemption 2.
Some creatures have been described as appearing translucent or naturally luminous — most likely marine species encountered while diving.
Green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, and rhesus macaques are all real invasive populations in Florida, and Rockstar has included them deliberately to mirror the state’s actual ecology.
Species details confirmed by Rockstar Games in the Game Informer issue 382 cover story, published September 29, 2026. Individual animal locations and the full legendary roster will be documented after the November 19, 2026 release. See also Weather & Climate and Locations.
