Can I pre-load GTA 6, and how much storage do I need?

Updated 2026-10-05
Digital pre-loading for GTA VI begins November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 launch. Rockstar has not announced an official file size. Based on comparable Rockstar releases, plan for roughly 150–200GB for the base game plus a day-one patch — clearing 250GB of free space is the safe target.

Pre-load timing is confirmed

Rockstar has confirmed digital pre-loading opens on November 12, 2026, seven days ahead of release. Pre-loading downloads and installs the game in advance; the files stay locked until the unlock time on November 19.

Physical copies do not change this. Rockstar has confirmed boxed editions contain a download code rather than a game disc, so every player downloads the game regardless of how they buy it.

File size has not been announced

Rockstar has published no official install size, and any specific figure circulating now is an estimate rather than a confirmed number. We will update this page the moment a real size appears on a platform store listing.

For planning purposes, recent Rockstar open-world releases and the scale of Leonida point to roughly 150–200GB for the base game. A day-one patch typically adds more. Clearing about 250GB leaves comfortable headroom.

How to free up space before November 12

  • Delete games you have finished — they stay in your library and can be reinstalled
  • Clear captured video and screenshots, which accumulate silently and can run to tens of gigabytes
  • On PS5, an add-in NVMe SSD can run PS5 games directly; external USB drives can only store them
  • On Xbox Series X|S, only the official Storage Expansion Card runs Series games directly

Start clearing space before pre-load opens rather than on launch day. If the download begins and your console runs out of room partway through, you will be doing this under time pressure while servers are busiest.
